Training Drills

Age 13 โ†’ HS Tryout. Focus: pressure handling, half-turn receiving, and building off the speed burst.

The Core Problem to Solve Right now the only weapon under pressure is the speed burst past defenders. The goal is to add 2โ€“3 credible alternatives so defenders hesitate โ€” which actually makes the speed burst work even better.
Wall Drills โ€” Solo
๐Ÿงฑ
First Touch + Half-Turn
Stand 4โ€“5 yards from wall. Pass the ball and as it leaves your foot, rotate your body sideways so you're half-turned when it returns. Receive across your body. Alternate left and right. Key: your hips should be turned BEFORE the ball arrives.
Wall
๐Ÿงฑ
Weak Foot Only
Same as above but left foot only for entire sets. 5 min per session minimum. This is the single highest-ceiling skill to build right now. Most late starters avoid this โ€” don't.
Wall
๐Ÿงฑ
Look Away Drill
Pass to wall, then immediately look left or right (away from the ball) for 1 second before it returns. Forces you to track the ball in peripheral vision and builds the habit of scanning. Start slow โ€” accuracy first, speed second.
Wall
Cone Drills โ€” Solo
๐Ÿ”ถ
Pressure Cone Turn
Place a cone 2โ€“3 yards in front of you (the "defender"). Receive a self-pass or dropped ball and practice turning away from the cone cleanly โ€” both directions. Focus on touching the ball into space, not into the cone.
Cones
๐Ÿ”ถ
Pull-Back + Accelerate
Dribble toward a cone at half-pace, plant your foot, pull the ball back with the sole, and explode in the opposite direction. This is the counter to a defender cutting off your speed burst lane. 10 reps each direction.
Cones
๐Ÿ”ถ
Shoulder Drop + Cut
Dribble toward a cone, dip one shoulder hard like you're going that direction, then cut the ball the other way and accelerate. No fancy footwork โ€” just sell the fake with your body, not your feet. Works best when defenders already respect the speed burst.
Cones
Partner Drills โ€” 1 Other Person
๐Ÿค
Passive Pressure Receiving
Partner passes the ball and then walks toward you slowly. You must receive, half-turn, and play it back before they reach you. Gradually speed up the walk over time. This simulates game pressure without needing a full defender.
Partner
๐Ÿค
1v1 Tight Space
Mark out a 5ร—10 yard channel. Defender tries to win the ball, attacker tries to dribble to the far end. Small space forces quick decisions and makes the pull-back and shoulder drop moves more realistic than cones. Swap after 5 attempts.
Partner
๐Ÿค
Give & Go Under Pressure
Partner passes to you while a second person (or the same partner after passing) closes in. You must one-touch or two-touch it back. Builds the habit of releasing early โ€” which takes pressure off the dribbling problem entirely.
Partner
Priority Order
1
Half-Turn
Prevent the problem before it starts
2
Weak Foot
Highest ceiling, most neglected
3
Pull-Back
Counters defenders cutting the speed burst lane
